Children’s Fishing Day ‘Andreas and Nadia Demetriou’ – 17/07/2017
The annual “Children Fishing event”, organized by the Cyprus Freshwater Angling Association and sponsored by A.D.D Fisherman Fishing Equipment Cyprus, is a long-time tradition, and it is probably the most important event organized by the CFAA. The 2017 event, the 12th Children Fishing Day, took place on Saturday June 17th, at the usual location of the small Agios Georgios Athalassa Lake. This year event was dedicated to the memory of Andreas and Nandia Demetriou, whose support had been a crucial factor in the success and popularity of the event.
As usual, this event attracted the interest of the Association’s members, and several new children joined some of the ones who had participated in previous years. Although the fish were not as co-operative as last year, the children managed to catch several fish from a variety of species, such as catfish, tilapia, bass, and carp. The 2017 event was slightly different than in previous years, for it also included education and of the children on what is fishing, how we set up fishing equipment, how to recognize the various species, and also stressed the importance of conservation, including an early introduction to “catch and release”. This new concept was perceived very positively and will be further expanded in the coming years.
The CFAA wants once more to thank the event’s sponsor A.D.D Fisherman Fishing Equipment Cyprus who provided the children with their first rods, along with t-shirts and hats, and of course the event’s cups. The Association would also like to thank the Forestry Department and the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research for providing the permits to allow the event to take place in this lake, and of course we would like to thank our main 2017 sponsors, Moondog’s, Presse Cafe Cyprus, and Kemanes PrintShop for their strong and valuable support. As for the Association, our greatest reward was to see the shining faces of many happy young children who just had their first experience with fishing, along with the proud faces of their parents!
